Landi was four years old when he saw the frozen sea for the first time. It was early winter morning and the entire horizon was white.
"Where did the sea go?" he asked his father. "It did not go. It is sleeping," said his father.
Landi thought — the sea sleeps? That made no sense. He listened: no waves. He looked: no movement. It was like a big old pane of glass.
"Can we wake it up?" asked Landi. His father sat beside him. "We can listen to it. Put your ear down."
Landi pressed his ear to the ice. And then he heard — distant sounds, tick-tick-tick, like the heart of the sea beating below.
"It beats!" cried Landi. "I hear its heart!"
His father smiled. "Exactly. Life continues even under the ice — fish, plants, living water. Winter does not kill them — it waits with them."
Landi stayed there a long time, with his ear on the ice, listening to the hidden world beneath the surface.
And he understood: things you cannot always see do exist. You just need to listen carefully.
