Sibling rivalry — normal

According to Kramer (2010), Child Development Perspectives, sibling rivalry is universal. Average conflict: 3.5 times/hour in preschoolers!

Causes

  • Competition for parental attention
  • Personal space — toys, room
  • Temperament differences
  • Jealousy when a new sibling arrives

How to manage

  • Don't compare: "Why aren't you like your sister?" — damages self-esteem
  • Don't always solve it: Teach them to resolve themselves (when there's no violence)
  • Individual time: Each child needs 1-on-1 with the parent
  • Name feelings: "I understand you're jealous when the baby gets attention"
  • Emphasize teamwork: "You're together against the problem"
