When to start?

  • 0–3 years: Listen to music, sing together, play with toy instruments
  • 3–5 years: Orff/Kodaly music classes — rhythm, singing, movement
  • 5–6 years: Piano/keyboard lessons — the ideal first instrument
  • 7+ years: Guitar, violin, flute — need more developed fingers and coordination

Benefits

According to Hyde et al. (2009), J Neuroscience:

  • Children with musical training have stronger neural connections
  • Improves reading, math, and memory

Tips

  • Don't force — loss of interest = try another instrument
  • Short daily practice (15–20 min) > long weekly lesson
